Happy Valentine’s Day !! I have flowers for you , my friends
I have never seen a Dahlia before I moved here to Australia. Well, maybe at a florist’s – but never growing in a garden . Its not native to India or the Middle East, where I grew up. I have never seen it in Madison, Wisconsin. Lots of tulips, but no dahlias.
Here in my neighbourhood, I am constantly surprised by one house’s garden. The garden is spectacular. Its not the quantity of flora that impresses me. Its the ever changing flower bed . This season, its the Dahlias. It is mind blowing. The grandeur of the bloom is breathless- so many layers, lush and the myriad of colours of Dahlias. So, naturally, I was dying to start painting it.
Here’s a peek into what I am working on …

Normally what I do , is paint the overall picture and THEN work on the itty bitty detailing . I like my brush to flow and let the glow happen later. In this case, I took a different route.
I first worked on the actual shape of the Dahlia – the bloom along with each petal. Then I proceeded to fill up the gaps with the colour of the flower. I didn’t think of it as a different approach at first. I did what came naturally to me. In this case, it was highly imperative that I get the grand bloom perfect.

It was only when I starting filling the voids, I realised that I do things differently . Anyway, Im realising, it is time consuming to stop and fill each void and then layer each one separately with a shade to highlight each one.

But, what is time consuming, technique-wise, is turning out quite attractive. I think I might spend a while to finish these. But, I am hoping the end result will speak of the technique and also do justice to the beautiful flower. I’m trying…
But , in my opinion, no one is a better artist than Mother Nature !
